Tue, 07 Apr 2020 10:27:49 +0000 en-GB hourly 1 https://wordpress.org/?v=6.1.6 Gender equality at work by Megan Edwards https://www.stackofbooks.com/gender-equality-at-work/ https://www.stackofbooks.com/gender-equality-at-work/#respond Thu, 26 Mar 2020 18:44:55 +0000 https://www.stackofbooks.com/?p=24672 Gender equality has an impact on all of us – in both general life and in the workplace. A workplace where gender is equal allows all colleagues to work and thrive in the same environment, with the same resources, the same opportunities and the same benefits. It’s very important to understand that gender equality is an issue for everybody, it is not just a female fight.
You are living in an era more accepting and encouraging of workplace equality than those before. Remember this and take advantage of it! You have the right to choose a career path you love and you should be given equal opportunities to excel in it. But it is also important to remember that the fight for gender equality in the workplace is an ongoing one – and you can be on the right side of it. It is important to listen to other people’s feelings and experiences with gender equality and to try to understand and empathise. By listening to and understanding other people’s experiences, you are making yourself aware of issues that other people face. You can then ensure that you act in a way that promotes and encourages gender equality at work!
One easy way that you can help to increase gender equality in the workplace is to reject stereotypes that can lead to workplace inequality.  For example, stereotypical gender roles can be harmful to equality at work. Remember that there is no such thing as a male job or a female job, feminine jobs or masculine jobs. You are coming to the stage in your lives where you can consider a future career path; encourage your friends and peers to consider career paths that they love, not that they feel that they can or should do based on societal pressure!

Autism and the Importance of Inclusiveness by Sarah Corrigan https://www.stackofbooks.com/autism-and-the-importance-of-inclusiveness/ https://www.stackofbooks.com/autism-and-the-importance-of-inclusiveness/#respond Sat, 19 Mar 2016 17:33:34 +0000 https://www.stackofbooks.com/?p=790
It’s great when books tell stories about characters that we can relate to. It’s easy to imagine going on an incredible adventure with a hero who looks or talks or acts like us. And seeing that hero overcome obstacles and achieve amazing things can be inspiring, and can also boost self-esteem. For this reason, it’s important that everyone can find book characters to relate to. Everyone deserves to feel good about themselves. Everyone deserves to see a hero that they feel resembles or represents them, and to be able to say, “Maybe I could do great things too, just like this character.” That’s why it’s so important that fiction gives a voice to children of all ages, races, genders, abilities and backgrounds. Seeing characters that resemble us actually helps to inspire us to try new things, because when we see someone like us going on an adventure or saving people or achieving a goal, we feel like we can do that too. Autism is a commonly misunderstood mental condition that affects thousands of children in the UK. It’s a spectrum, meaning that there is a whole range of possible features that a child with autism might have. Which means that an autistic child reading a book about another child with autism might not see themselves in that character. And as we’ve mentioned before, doesn’t everyone deserve to be represented? As autism is commonly misunderstood, it also makes sense that children’s fiction could be a fantastic way of helping people to learn about it. Children without autism can find out what life is like to live with the condition, and children with autism should also be able to have heroes that they feel resemble them. There are some awesome children’s books with autistic heroes already out there, but they only cover a small part of the spectrum. Children (and adults!) on other parts of the spectrum deserve to see themselves in books, just as children without autism already do, because everyone deserves to feel like they can do anything.

We are one by Zilver Eden https://www.stackofbooks.com/we-are-one-by-zilver-eden/ https://www.stackofbooks.com/we-are-one-by-zilver-eden/#respond Sat, 19 Sep 2015 11:09:23 +0000 https://www.stackofbooks.com/?p=523 We are back! Check out this fantastic poem from one of our new poets onboard Zilver Eden.

We are One

When I look at you I see another version of me, a version that is judged by many but accepted by few.
When I look at you I see a bundle of joy, a spark of hope, a flame of love and the light of life.
When I look at you I see my future growing, my present blooming and my past learning.
When I look at you, I don’t just see you… I see them too and when I see them
I don’t see race, gender, age or religion
I see children laughing, father’s crying, mother’s praying and a world changing.
When I look at you, I’m looking at you and all of you
That’s when I know we are one because when I look at you… I know I am you.

Be Kind To Others If You Want Them To Be Kind To You By Kristine Fagboyegun https://www.stackofbooks.com/be-kind-to-others-if-you-want-them-to-be-kind-to-you-by-kristine-fagboyegun/ https://www.stackofbooks.com/be-kind-to-others-if-you-want-them-to-be-kind-to-you-by-kristine-fagboyegun/#respond Sat, 19 Sep 2015 10:59:37 +0000 https://www.stackofbooks.com/?p=427 To be kind is to be nice and caring towards the people around you. Showing kindness to others is something that everyone should try and do. If you show kindness to others it is very likely that they will show kindness to you too.

You can be kind in school by simply saying ‘good morning’ to your teachers and classmates or seeing if someone is okay if they look unhappy. Even smiling can show kindness; it makes you seem happy and friendly plus, it takes more muscles to smile than it does to frown!

You never know how an act of kindness could brighten someone’s day!

Parents should always lead by example; be kind and motivate their children to be kind too. Children often pick up on things that happen around them; if parents show kindness it is likely that with time it will become natural for their children too.

Respect – the ultimate tool to a better you by Aisha Ahmed https://www.stackofbooks.com/respect-the-ultimate-tool-to-a-better-you-by-aisha-ahmed/ https://www.stackofbooks.com/respect-the-ultimate-tool-to-a-better-you-by-aisha-ahmed/#respond Tue, 21 Jul 2015 19:34:50 +0000 https://www.stackofbooks.com/?p=469 Gaining respect is as much about giving as it is receiving. You always hear as you are growing up: you should respect your elders, they are older than you, and therefore they deserve respect. However, it should not end there, not by any means.

Respect your parents: your teachers, your colleagues, your friends, your family, those younger than you, those less fortunate than you; and show it.

Showing respect to your fellow beings says a lot about you as a person. It implies one is mature, has good character and a positive attitude.

When a person shows respect to another, they not only gain respect in return, but they are also able to communicate and build better relationships with others, making their lives more pleasant and enjoyable overall.

You’re one in a biscuit-tin! By Jennifer Brooks https://www.stackofbooks.com/youre-one-in-a-biscuit-tin-by-jennifer-brooks/ https://www.stackofbooks.com/youre-one-in-a-biscuit-tin-by-jennifer-brooks/#respond Mon, 20 Jul 2015 18:59:47 +0000 https://www.stackofbooks.com/?p=497 One of our favourite poets Jenni Brooks with another sweet little classic. Poem of the Week!

If you work hard and you try hard there is nothing you can’t be

Your hands are your tools and your mind is the key.

There are over six billion human people on this planet

So you’re one in six billion-and you’re stronger than granite.

There is a lot you can do with just an inkling of courage

You can do it, you’re amazing, so just don’t be discouraged.

Everyone is special so just sit back and grin

So don’t forget that you are… one in a biscuit-tin!

Football is not just for boys by Rachel Terzian https://www.stackofbooks.com/football-is-not-just-for-boys-by-rachel-terzian/ https://www.stackofbooks.com/football-is-not-just-for-boys-by-rachel-terzian/#respond Fri, 17 Jul 2015 14:19:44 +0000 https://www.stackofbooks.com/?p=439 My name is Elisa, and I absolutely LOVE playing football! It’s so much fun! It is a wonderful feeling when I pass the ball to my friends and help them to score a goal, and I also love it when I’m the one to kick the ball into the net.

Some of my friends tell me that football is a sport only for boys…but that can’t be right!

I think I am even better at football than some of the boys in my class.

So I’m going to keep on playing, I’m not going to listen to what the other girls say.

I’ve never been interested in dolls and other girly things, but that doesn’t matter.

I love playing football, and that is never going to change.

So watch out boys, because I won’t go easy on you!

How to deal with bullies by Ana De-Jesus https://www.stackofbooks.com/how-to-deal-with-bullies-by-ana-de-jesus/ https://www.stackofbooks.com/how-to-deal-with-bullies-by-ana-de-jesus/#respond Thu, 09 Jul 2015 19:37:43 +0000 https://www.stackofbooks.com/?p=471 When a little girl or boy goes to big school it can turn into a scary place. Not everyone is as helpful or friendly as your favourite teacher and it can make you quite sad. Sometimes you get called names or made fun of which will make you cry. Well I am going to let you into a little secret, those bullies may be feeling sad or angry too which is why people are bullied. At playtime always be kind and friendly even if they say hurtful things to you because remember they are hurting too. By being nice you are the better person and someday they will realize that it is better to be friends than enemies.

If the bully continues to make you sad it is best to tell an adult who can help solve the problem. Tell them what has happened and how it makes you feel inside. If you are feeling extra super-duper brave then you can try and talk to your bully with your teacher! It shows that you are very grown up and will make your teacher very proud.

Even when your bully leaves you alone you can still feel very sad. To make you feel happy again you could take on a new hobby like horse-riding or football or even write in a special secret diary that can be written in daily. Remember even big girls and boys get bullied too so do not feel like you’re the only bullied kid. Many children like you will face bullies someday so it’s important to always see the good in the bad.

Never Stop Trying by Namishka Doshi https://www.stackofbooks.com/never-stop-trying-by-namishka-doshi/ https://www.stackofbooks.com/never-stop-trying-by-namishka-doshi/#respond Wed, 08 Jul 2015 20:12:43 +0000 https://www.stackofbooks.com/?p=506 Have you ever started to do something and realised that it isn’t as easy as it looks? Like riding a bike or making a cake, sometimes things can get frustrating when you are trying really hard to do something and you just can’t get it right.

‘Practice makes perfect’ – I’m sure you have heard that one before. But how many of us actually do practice something and carry on when we find it difficult? Even though something may seem impossible, you should never give it up if you have not tried your best.

You might be surprised at what you are capable of! No one was born being able to do everything that they are good at now. The only way you can bring out the talent that hides inside you is to persevere, even when you think you can’t.

Thomas Edison, the inventor of the lightbulb, failed one THOUSAND times before he was successful in doing so. So remember; try one more, and you may end up doing something great.

Share them by Sophie Hussain https://www.stackofbooks.com/material-things-share-them-by-sophie-hussain/ https://www.stackofbooks.com/material-things-share-them-by-sophie-hussain/#respond Wed, 08 Jul 2015 20:01:13 +0000 https://www.stackofbooks.com/?p=477 As a kid it can become very distressing when someone asks to borrow or play with your toys. (Trust me, I know the feeling.) This may be because they can’t afford their own or maybe because they find yours a lot more fun and appealing to play with!

As we grow older we realise that things such as toys are not as important as we think they are. Sharing may not necessarily be regarding toys it can be almost anything. This may revolve around food too!

Sometimes we are a lot more privileged than we think we are. Someone may ask to share some of that very appealing cake you’re eating. You may not want to share it with them but this could possible demonstrate your respect towards others.

As you start sharing, you’ll notice that your inner happiness will increase. At the end of the day, sharing is caring.
